I’m trying to set up a blog. The general assumption is that you sign up for some free software, choose a template and off-you-go. That hasn’t been my experience. The last few days have been an exercise in learning unfamiliar software with new terminology and confusing processes. But I think I’m getting there. I must be because I’m starting to worry about what to say.
Now I need inspiration. Luckily, it’s all around me. On my right is the dresser my grandfather bought nearly 100 years ago, a wonderfully plain piece by Ambrose Heal. Behind me is the drop-arm sofa my parents bought when they were just married, the Barber-Winster stands by the door and beyond is the mid-century bookcase by Nils Strinning. They all have design merit which we enjoy, but their greater value lies in the stories they remind us of.
The smaller objects tell the biggest stories. The medal collections from family who served on different sides in the Great War are almost too poignant to describe, a small box found deep in a Marrakesh souk recalls travel adventures, and paintings by friends remind us of special places and relationships.
Beautiful objects create beautiful spaces but it’s the stories that accompany them which weave the tapestry of our lives into a unique home.
