I have especially enjoyed making a fire surround and mantle-piece for university friends, Pete and Claire. They live in a lovely old farmhouse in the Midlands which retains lots of old features with the exception of one room which has lost its fire surround. We agreed that the new addition should be super-simple to complement their modern wood stove, and not make any pretense of originality.
Some nice cherry has provided wonderful mellow tones which will sit comfortably with the mahogany and walnut furniture in their snug. It’s a place to shut out the winter storms.

Claire is a super-talented quilter and we have agreed a skills-swap, they get a fire surround and we get a hand-made quilt. It’s ready for their next visit now that the snow has gone. And one of their daughter’s makes violins so I’m very conscious that my work will be critically reviewed!
