The immense structures of the Settle-Carlisle railway create striking shapes. Chief amongst them are the huge arches of the viaducts that span the rivers and mosses which created obstacles to the line’s construction. The eleven span Arten Gill Viaduct is a familiar view from my workshop window and it was an easy decision to incorporate it into this triptych mirror.

Cherry with walnut details create a gentle combination that sits comfortably on the Victorian mahogany dressing table it was designed for. The massive supporting piers which flare outwards towards their base are achieved through combining the frames of each panel and contrast with the delicate arches and keystones which support the joint-work, just as they do in the structures themselves.
